From School Library Journal
With Shakespearean and classic romantic literature being introduced in high school, this book seems a perfect fit for teens. After all, Romeo and Juliet are teens, and they're in love—unless they're not. It's up to readers to choose. Maybe Romeo can't get past his lust for the unattainable Rosaline, or he'd rather hang out with his best buds Mercutio and Benvolio. Maybe Juliet follows her parents' advice and marries Tom Paris, or she flees the Capulet household to escape the arranged marriage and become a pirate. If the pair do manage to meet and fall in love, can they escape a tragic end? North has turned Shakespeare's play about star-crossed lovers into a seemingly endless game of choices, with the ability to play as either Romeo or Juliet and a guarantee that any path taken will turn into an outrageously silly adventure. For some threads, North cleverly inserts original passages from Shakespeare's work to heighten the comic effect. Gamers will be attracted to the format, and fans of North's comic book series "The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl" will already be familiar with his signature brand of humor. More than 80 artists have contributed an eclectic mix of original illustrations that highlight the hilarity of many of the possible endings. VERDICT Even incurable romantics are sure to find this a fun parody and a welcome diversion from the required reading list.—Cary Frostick, formerly at Mary Riley Styles Public Library, Falls Church, VA

Review
Winner of the American Library Association's Alex Award for the best adult books that appeal to teen audiences“Shakespeare with even more sex, cryptography, time travel and alternate endings than the original! Ryan North is the only writer I know who's smart enough and funny enough to pull this off.” —Lev Grossman, author of the Magicians trilogy“[A] ridiculously fun book…Ryan North is awesome…It is as hilarious and funny and strange as you would imagine…so crazy, so much fun…It’s fantastic,” —BookRiot“This book/game is so entertaining and downright hilarious that I guarantee you will... have an amazing time. In fact, you’ll probably end up buying multiple copies to give to your friends and family.” —Geek & Sundry“Written with the finest distilled charm and genuine enthusiasm. Entertaining and extremely satisfying.” —Kate Beaton, author of Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, PopsPraise for previous work by Ryan North:“Reference mixed with irreverence--that's what makes To Be or Not to Be so much fun.”—Slate“Ryan North's The Best of Dinosaur Comics: 2003-2005 A.D. had me howling with laughter and passing the book around to whomever I could lay hands on to point out particularly good strips. Dinosaur Comics is an unlikely gem of a webcomic.”—Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing“Machine of Death is a marvelous collection, riddled with intelligence, creative reach, and a frankness that makes the best use of the central gimmick.”—Tasha Robinson, The Onion A.V. Club“This Is How You Die is a brilliantly addictive book that reads like a series of existential, death-obsessed Twilight Zone episodes. Very highly recommended.”—Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who loves Shakespeare. I got curious about it and as I started flipping through it, I began reading. Suddenly, I was creating my own adventure. The humor is exciting and addicting. I couldn't put it down! I finished one story, then unlocked a hidden character and began reading through THAT story! Oh man! I think I'll have to buy my friend another copy now, because I'm in too deep to stop now! So much fun!
One of the best choose your own adventures I have ever read. So hard to put down! Bought it as a gift, but now I might have to buy another copy! Very entertaining for those that know Shakespeare and people that completely don't. Tons of guest artists make page turning and endings so enjoyable! You can also unlock other characters such as Juliet's nurse in a sequence called Nurse Quest and play mini adventures in dream sequences based on other Shakespeare works such as A Midsummer Night's Dream. The adventures and endings can be outrageous and silly, but make complete sense in other areas. For example, if you play as Juliet, you can have the option of just telling your parents the truth about you getting married instead of fake killing yourself. Their response may surprise you. You can avoid the senseless love tragedy of the original, but it is up to you to figure out how... Oh, and if you are up to the challenge, yes: you can get to a point where you are Romeo AND Juliet, just like in the title of the book.
Note that this review is largely be in view of someone who read the first book, To Be or Not To Be, which I also recommend.First thing's first, this book actually solved a major issue I had with To Be or Not To Be, which was that in that book you had the path that followed the original play Hamlet, and it felt largely like the other paths were just sprouting off this main one. There were a few places where a totally new storyline would sprout, but for the most part you had to read through a lot of one path to find a number of endings. With this book the paths that deviate from the original early on feel more like their own stories, and there are numerous locations where you can veer off but then return to the original story, so if you want to read to the end of the normal story more than once you have option so you don't reread a lot of things.Another area this book improves on the first is simply how it's designed. The first gave every choice at least its own page, which led to a lot of empty space. This one divides the choices into sections, so most of every page is utilized. There was only one spot where this was problematic, as one section had two choices listed but the second choice was on the second page, so it could be easily missed. Also: I know nobody actually cares about the design. I'll move on.This book has not one but two story-within-a-stories (not counting the Romeo and/or Juliet-within-a-Romeo and/or Juliet), and one is about drugs and amazing and has an adorable Puck (thanks to one Andrew Hussie). A few other outlandish things from To Be or Not To Be return as well, such as ghost time travel, but I actually felt the returning outlandish things weren't utilized as interestingly as in the first book. But this book does have new outlandish things that are amazing, such as controlling more than one character at once or unlockable characters. Yes, you can unlock a character by completing a certain path. It's pretty obvious which path it is, though. Maybe next book Ryan can fit an unlockable character into an unexpected path. Come on, let us choose a story using one of those robot suits!Ultimately this story is hilarious, and that's the point. Whether it's the witty or silly characters (definitely the best-written Friar Lawrence ever), the Shakespearean prose reduced to plain English/bullet points/power point slides, or just the ridiculous narration (find out how he gets out of writing a sex scene!!), every path has something to laugh at. In the end I would have to say this book is an improvement on the first, and book scientists that I totally didn't pay off thought that was impossible!
Satirical and fun, I've really enjoyed this book. There are so many possibilities and paths to follow that you can never say you are finished with this tale. Even if it leads you to an ending, you want to start again to see where it leads the next time. Oh. And did I mention it's funny too?
This is a witty and hilarious book. It's rare for a book to make me literally laugh out loud, but this does frequently. It's more more fun the more you know about "Romeo and Juliet", but it's funny even if you only have a passing knowledge of the play. Still, I'd have to say it's not quite as good as "To Be and/or Not To Be", by the same author, so if you're going to read just one, try the other one first. But if you've read and enjoyed "To Be and/or Not To Be", there's a 100% chance you'll enjoy this one as well.
This book is a lot of fun. I'm glad I got an actual book instead of the Kindle edition, so I could keep track of my paths easier. I read it on a long plane trip back from London and am actually not sure I finished it completely since there are so many possible outcomes. I love the different takes on the main characters and had a good time playing both Romeo and Juliet. My favorite part was actually when I unlocked another character, Rosaline, though I kept getting her killed. There is a minor reference to sex, but that of course is the same reference made int he original play, so nothing detailed or graphic. There is also a lot of death, but again we are dealing with Shakespeare, so it's a given.
