In the new thriller from critics’ favorite Matthew Klein, Jimmy Thane thinks that his new job as the CEO of a failing company will help turn his life around. He should think again.

Jimmy Thane knows all about crossroads. Every time he’s faced with one he’s taken the wrong path. At the peak of his career, he chose alcohol. When his job became shaky, he turned to drugs. And when his wife lost faith in him, he turned to other women. Now, Jimmy’s clean, and he’s at a new crossroad: he’s landed the job of a CEO at a failing company in South Florida and has seven weeks to turn it around.
Except, from the moment he enters the building, he senses there’s something very wrong―the place is too quiet, too empty. When the police come calling about the disappearance of the former CEO, Jimmy begins to wonder what he got himself into.

Then he discovers surveillance equipment in his neighbor’s house, looking straight into his living room. And he begins to notice that his wife isn’t just tired, she’s terrified, and trying to hide it.

Nothing is as it seems. Jimmy no longer feels like he’s living the dream. Instead, he’s plunged into the worst kind of nightmare there is. And when he finally gets to the truth, it’s more shocking and terrifying than could be imagined.

From Booklist
Jim Thane calls himself a corporate turnaround executive, but thanks to substance abuse and gambling, he needs some turning around himself. A friend sets him up with a job at Tao Software, and Thane hopes he can set the company back on track while righting his own ship. It isn’t long before he discovers the company’s problem. Thanks to a thief, the place is nearly broke. Perhaps the thief was Jim’s predecessor, who disappeared without a trace, or more likely, the shadowy Ghol Gedrosian, whom no one claims to know but everyone seems to fear. Jim must recoup the funds, but as he goes about the job, he comes to realize that nobody close to him wants him to succeed—not the friend who got him the job, not his pretty personal assistant, not his therapists, not even his wife of many years. Ignoring both subtle and overt warnings about pursuing his investigation, Jim plunges ahead, only to find that his self-awareness and his grasp of the situation at hand have little basis in reality. A scattering of clues along the way comes together in a substantial surprise ending. An exciting corporate thriller. --Stephanie Zvirin

Review
“Beautifully plotted, fiendishly clever and one of the most impressive thrillers I’ve read in a long time...Klein does many things well. He gleefully savages venture capitalists and turnaround wizards, he creates a villain who’s about as scary as villains get, and he displays a remarkable ability to hoodwink his readers. Nothing is sacred; evil runs rampant...It’s all a bit astonishing.” (The Washington Post Book World)

“Infused with pacing worthy of the earlier works of Dean Koontz, Klein’s crafted a tale as tightly wound as a watch spring.” (Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review)

“Klein’s crisp, original voice is all at once peppy, funny, snappy, and darkly humorous ... Thoroughly enjoyable and compelling from start to finish.” (Library Journal)

“No Way Back is a deliciously written book, full of slick phrases, great characters and dark comedy, coupled with a plot that keeps driving forward relentlessly.” (The Daily Telegraph)

“One of the best crime novels I have read in a long time.” (CrimeSquad)

From the Publisher
The author has attended every reunion of the 509th Composite Group since 1994. In 2004, he created a full-scale exact replica of the Little Boy atomic bomb for permanent display at the Historic Wendover, Utah Airfield Museum. Before final delivery to Wendover, it was signed by all of the surviving members of the 509th at their 2004 reunion in Wichita. This book was used by Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) author Dr. Robert S. Norris as the primary source for information on both bombs in his monumental "Racing For The Bomb" biography of General Groves published in 2002. Excerpts from the book pertaining to the Little Boy safing and arming plugs were used by the Defense (Exhibit K) in the famous case of the United States vs. Butterfields Auctioneers (Case No. 02-2776) and were instrumental in U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston's 6/14/2002 decision to reject the government's claim to the plugs. The book was used by Japanese author Kiyoshi Souwa for his 2003 book "Hiroshima Atomic Bombing, The Meaning To Drop It At 8:15 A.M." and by English author Stephen Walker for his 2005 book "Shockwave." The book was also used as the main source for artist Jim Sanborn's 2003 "Critical Assembly" exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery in DC. The book is in the technical libraries at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Aldermaston in England, and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum library. People at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National Laboratory (SNL), ORNL, LLNL, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Hanford, DOE, Fermilab, IAEA, Naval Post Graduate School, NRDC, Georgetown University, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford have all bought copies. He serves as advisor to the National Atomic Museum and The Children of the Manhattan Project Preservation Association.

The author worked with the BBC, which produced a documentary pertaining to the bombs and used his book as source material. He has been interviewed by ABC News, National Public Radio in Vienna, Austria, NHK TV Tokyo, Hiroshima Chogoku Shimbun, and The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He gave a presentation at a Manhattan Project Symposium in New York on 6/26/04 and on 8/14/04, along with General Paul Tibbets, at the Wright-Patterson USAF Museum in Ohio. On April 6, 2005, he met with the Hiroshima World Peace Mission delegation at Wendover where they inspected the areas where the original test atomic bombs were assembled and uncovered the fragmentary remains of the grounded copper-covered floor used in the Fat Man test unit final assembly building. In August 2005, he was honored to accept an invitation by the government of Tinian to give a series of presentations on the 60th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan to an audience of both US and Japanese veterans.
